Losing Weight Without Blowing Your Food Budget: Is it Really Possible?

Losing weight is hard enough to do at the best of times. But what about when you’re on a tight food budget? Is it really possible to lose weight without spending extra money on food?

A lot of people will try to tell you that losing weight should cost you less money, In their reasoning, healthy food costs less than junk food. And if you eat healthier food, you’ll lose weight. Right?

It’s true that a healthy diet costs more than a less healthy one

 

Actually, that isn’t necessarily true. In fact, a 2013 meta-analysis looked at the cost of different diet options in a number of developed countries. It found that, on average, healthy food costs more than less healthy options. This is why we are seeing a growing obesity problem among low income earners.

But there must be some way to lose weight without blowing your food budget. I mean, losing weight can’t be enormously expensive. Can it?

Losing Weight Without Spending Extra Money

Well, there are a few free and inexpensive ways to go about losing weight. Here’s a quick round-up:

  • Practise portion control. This is the simplest approach to the food aspect of losing weight. Respect the serving sizes, which are generally a lot smaller than the portions we would like to put on our plates. In our house, we use the Canada Food Guide serving sizes as much as possible. We’re still not great at sticking to the servings for things like pasta and meat. But when we’re consciously working on losing weight, we do try to buckle down.
  • Drink water before meals. Take advantage of free or cheap water supplies. Even if you’re paying for it, water is almost always less expensive than juices, smoothies, sodas, and other drinks. Water also helps to cut your appetite if you drink it before meals. And it’s scientifically proven that drinking water helps you lose weight.
  • Eat soup before your meals. Losing weight doesn’t have to mean starving yourself. You can make an inexpensive vegetable soup to eat before your main dish. Science tells us doing this will fill you up on healthy veggies, and it will help you to eat fewer calories during that meal. Even if you count the calories of the soup itself, the calorie count for the meal will be less! Losing weight is all about using more calories than you consume, so why not try it?

  1. I agree with everything, especially the small proportion. A few days back I was listening to a Motivational speaker, and he was telling about how he lost so much weight by just using a small plate, instead of a proper adult size.

    Masticating, which is chewing your food properly, can also be a good way to lose some weight. When you are chewing your food properly, it will take more time, and your body’s internal clock gives you a false signal, that your stomach is full, even though it is not.

    1. This is very true! Chewing thoroughly aids digestion and stretches our meal over a longer time. Europeans are always shocked at how fast North Americans wolf down a meal, and I think we’re teaching kids to do that in primary school. Lunch monitors rush the children to eat, so they can send them outside to play.

      Many children say they are either throwing out good food, or they are eating fast and not taking time to chew. They will often skip over healthy foods, like carrot sticks, which take longer to eat. Instead they’ll eat pudding cups, cookies, or other dessert items that go down quickly.

      The bad habits of childhood stick with us into adulthood, especially when a busy class schedule at college or a short meal break in the workplace forces us to eat on the run. Many of us will choose fast food, and eat while moving from one place to another. It’s really hard to choose healthy foods and to take the time to sit down and thoroughly chew our food, when most of our lives we’ve had to rush through a meal in order to get to the next activity.
