Why a “24 Carrot” Diet?
What the heck is a “24 carrot” diet? Do you have to eat two dozen carrots each day to be healthy? Is this some sort of strange fad diet? No, not at all!
A “gold standard” is the best of its kind. And when we’re talking about the purity of gold, 24 K is the finest it gets. It means the highest quality, a specimen of metal that is as close to pure as possible.
When we’re talking about food, “carats” aren’t really relevant. But “carrots” certainly are! Carrots are one of the best known vegetables, with a history dating back to at least 3000 BCE and a presence on pretty much every continent in the world. They are an economical source of nutrients, with a single carrot supplying enough vitamin A for two whole days.
Carrots are also classic diet food. They supply soluble fibre for satiety, regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and overall heart health. Carrots are low in carbs and sodium, and almost completely fat free. And one medium calorie provides only 25 calories, so it really is one of those healthy vegetables you can munch on as often as you like!

Hi everyone! Thanks for stopping by 24 Carrot Diet. I’m happy that I can share with you!
People always want to know who is behind the articles they read on a web site. But let me tell you a secret: most writers have a tough time writing about themselves. And I am not an exception! This “about” page has taken forever to write, longer than pretty much any other content on this site. Because, although I know you want to learn something about the person who writes the articles you enjoy here, I just really want to write about the food!
Who is Kyla?
Who am I? As a writer, I have been producing content since before there was a web. I started out with promotional materials, Q&As, and how-to articles. But I’ve since written some feature articles for publications like the Senior Times and did writing work for the International Jukaido-Kan Ju-Jutsu Association. Online, I wrote for Associated Content and then later for Yahoo. I have also done freelance work for private clients.
I am a wife and mother to four beautiful kids, several of whom are living with disabilities. These days, I live in the beautiful East Kootenay Mountains of British Columbia, but I’m a transplant from Quebec. I grew up as an anglophone in the francophone majority, and am bilingual enough that I sometimes dream in French. Before I was married, I worked on both medical and psychiatric care units at Canada’s last federally run veterans hospital. Academically, I have dabbled in science, the classics, and education, and I hold an AEC in gerontology.
I could tell you a million things about myself, but what you really need to know is that I’ve been in love with food pretty much my whole life. By that, I don’t just mean that I like to cook or I enjoy eating. I mean that I’m fascinated with food. Everything about it seems magical for me – from what makes meat brown when you cook it, to what colour carrots were a thousand years ago.
What Inspired 24 Carrot Diet?
24 Carrot Diet started with this fascination. It comes from me wanting to talk about the fact that there are some 15,000 to 20,000 varieties of tomatoes in existence. Did you know that more than 50 of them were bred right here in Canada?
It comes from the thrill I got the first time I picked a zucchini that I grew with my own hands. And from the frustration I felt when my entire lettuce crop bolted.
Most of all, 24 Carrot Diet comes from my own family’s experience with food. I understand how hard it can be to get your kids to eat healthy foods – and how easy it is sometimes to give into those requests for burgers or pizza! I share your concern about the rising cost of food, and the fact that healthier food choices are often the more expensive ones.
As I state elsewhere on the site, I am not a trained nutritionist or health care professional. But I have studied some aspects of nutrition as part of my gerontology training.
I had a real epiphany when I started looking at the nutritional profiles of fruits and vegetables next to meats, dairy products, and other foods. So it didn’t surprise me that other adults lacked an understanding of how different foods measure up next to one another. I want to share with you what I’ve learned about eating healthy – and it isn’t as simple as just eating foods from each of the four food groups every day!
